Indi Energy is back with the fifteenth edition of “Sodium-ion Batteries Technology Updates.”

Indi Energy, a DRDO 3.0 and National Startup Award winner is an energy storage startup from India developing and commercializing sodium ion batteries. We consciously chose to research and develop because, apart from being a good choice for the environment, the performance of our batteries also speaks for itself.

In the fifteenth edition of “Sodium ion batteries technology updates” we are bringing you a very special profile on Sir C.V. Raman, the first Indian Nobel Laureate in Physics, along with an interesting write-up courtesy of Dr. Nagesh Kumar, the co-founder and Chief Material Specialist of Indi Energy.

Remembering the works of Sir C.V. Raman

National Science Day is celebrated on February 28 every year to mark the discovery of the “Raman Effect” on February 28, 1928, by Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.

This groundbreaking work demonstrated the inelastic scattering of photons by matter, laying the foundation for Raman spectroscopy. His spectroscopic technique, developed over years of research, became pivotal in chemical analysis and material characterization.

Before his optical achievement, Raman made contributions to acoustics, studying stringed instrument mechanics. Additionally, he was also responsible for advancements in molecular diffraction, the optics of colloids, and organic crystal properties. Beyond his scientific endeavors, Raman also established research institutes like the Indian Institute of Science and the Raman Research Institute, fostering scientific growth in India.

Throughout his life, he was an advocate for science education, emphasizing the importance of fundamental research in national development. Raman spectroscopy is still widely used today to study materials’ structural, chemical, and electronic properties, making it a valuable tool in battery research and development. Scientists use Raman spectroscopy to analyze electrode materials, electrolytes, and interfaces in batteries, providing insights into their behavior and performance.

May his life continue to inspire us all!

Why will Sodium ion batteries play a crucial role in the sustainable energy transition?

In our journey towards sustainable energy, sodium ion batteries stand out as a pivotal innovation. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion technology leverages abundant sodium resources, offering cost-effective alternatives to traditional energy storage methods.

According to Custom Market Insights (CMI), the global sodium-ion battery market was estimated at USD 1120 million in 2021, is expected to reach USD 1317 million in 2022, and is expected to hit around USD 2899 million by 2030, poised to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.8% from 2022 to 2030.

Yet coping with the global renewable energy market size, which was worth around USD 0.90 trillion in 2022 and may reach USD 2.06 trillion with a CAGR of 8.6%, there is a huge market demand and supply gap in energy storage that only a reliable technology like sodium-ion can sustainably support.

With lower production costs, environmental friendliness, and compatibility with existing infrastructure, sodium ion batteries address the intermittency challenges of renewables, ensuring grid stability and energy independence worldwide. Their enhanced safety features further highlight their significance, promising a safer and more efficient energy storage solution.
