Welcome to the forty-third issue of “Sodium-ion Batteries Technology Updates,” a series from Indi Energy, one of the world’s leading sodium battery companies and India’s first indigenous sodium-ion battery manufacturers.
Indi Energy is a DRDO 3.0, NSA’22, & SIDBI Environmental Challenge’24 winner and one of the world’s leading sodium battery companies involved in developing, and commercializing sodium-ion batteries and customizable sodium-ion battery packs.
As part of the Make in India initiative, Indi Energy has its own supply chain for our sodium-ion batteries, which is completely indigenous, a.k.a. homegrown. We are setting a new benchmark in the energy storage sector by transforming energy storage solutions sustainably.
In this forty-third issue of sodium-ion battery technology updates, we will go through the recent updates in the world of sodium-ion batteries, the energy sector, and an overview of the global energy outlook.
Sodium-ion batteries: The Future of Energy Storage
The world’s largest battery energy storage system using next-generation sodium-ion batteries has begun operations in China, demonstrating the immense potential of this groundbreaking technology. Capable of powering 12,000 homes on a single charge, this 100,000 kWh project marks a milestone for sodium-ion battery technology and renewable energy storage.
Sodium-ion batteries were chosen over lithium-ion batteries because sodium is almost 500 times more abundant than lithium, making these batteries significantly cheaper. Additionally, their exceptional low- and high-temperature operating performance is a feat that lithium-ion batteries simply cannot match!
We are thrilled by these developments. In just under a year, the world has witnessed a sodium-ion-powered EV and now a full-scale BESS! These advancements underscore the rapid progress of sodium-ion battery technology and highlight the crucial role of advanced energy storage solutions in optimizing renewable energy sources.
Indi Energy is leading the global sustainability charge with our innovative sodium-ion batteries and customized sodium-ion battery packs, powered by the world’s highest-performing hard carbon made from bio/organic waste: Indi Energy’s BioBlack™! The day is fast approaching when sodium-ion batteries will see widespread adoption in our daily lives.
Sodium-ion batteries can make Renewable Energy Affordable!
According to Energy Monitor, a reputable AI-based publication that predicts technological breakthroughs based on global patent data, sodium-ion batteries will disrupt the Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) market in the coming years by becoming more affordable.
- 🔋 Affordable LDES is fundamental for the global energy transition because it stores excess energy generated during peak solar and wind production and releases it during periods of low production or high demand. This reduces our dependency on fossil fuels and enables widespread integration of renewable energy into the power grid.
- 💡 According to GetFocus, achieving a cost of around $50/kWh is essential for BESS to be economically viable for grid-scale LDES in renewable energy applications. The research claims that by 2028, sodium-ion batteries are projected to be significantly cheaper, potentially reaching around $40/kWh with a similar capital expenditure cost as lithium-ion batteries, positioning them as a game-changer in the energy storage market.
🌱 Think about this possibility: a future where households can achieve self-sufficiency by linking solar panels with sodium-ion batteries, democratizing energy storage.
At Indi Energy, we are hard at work to make this future a reality. Our commitment to innovation and sustainability has empowered us to ensure that our sodium-ion battery technology is efficient, reliable, and cost-effective, making clean energy even more accessible and affordable.
At Indi Energy, we are harnessing sodium, one of Earth’s most abundant elements, integrating it with our proprietary, BioBlackTM—bio waste and agricultural waste derived organic hard carbon, sodium-ion cathode, and sustainable liquid sodium electrolyte. They form the core components of our sodium-ion batteries and customizable sodium-ion battery packs, capable of delivering optimum performance while setting the industry’s highest safety standards.
Our sodium-ion battery technology represents a cost-effective, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional lithium-based batteries 🔋, ensuring affordable and accessible energy storage solutions that will promote sustainable energy practices, benefiting society and driving economic growth.
The potential impact of our sodium-ion batteries on climate action has led to Energy Alternatives India and The Better India naming Indi Energy as one of its “Top 100 Innovative Indian Startups in Climate Action,” and “5 Innovating Startups Revolutionising India’s Renewable Energy Sector.”
